Isle of Barra
The smallest and most remote of our main islands, Barra was the star of the famous UK classic, Whisky Galore, or Tight Little Island as it was known in the US. Only five miles across by eight miles long, you'll find that a lot of the real Barra can be found in the film. Most importantly, the close-knit community depicted in Whisky Galore is still very much alive today, with legendary ceilidh dances and social gatherings where everyone is welcome. The secluded bay in Barra's main harbour town, Castlebay, the centre stage for the film, shelters the historic and impressive Kisimul Castle, ancient seat of the Clan Macneil. There are also a few surprises: for example, the waters around Barra are home to a playful, friendly school of dolphins and the compact island is perfect for cycling on secluded roads, walking, heritage, wildlife, flora and fauna - Barra boasts over 1000 different species of wild flowers!
The wry island sense of humour and strong character of the people live on, but it has to be said that the scenery looks far more stunning in full sunshine-basked colour than in the original black and white film!
